It is now possible to measure methane emissions on a global scale. This is a defining moment because there are many large, often unreported sources around the world, and methane is a potent greenhouse gas. The potential for reducing man-made emissions is therefore significant, and everybody – companies, investors and regulators – has a role to play.
THE TECHNOLOGY IS READY FOR IMPLEMENTATION
Kayrros has developed Methane Watch, an automated surveillance system based on data from the European Space Agency’s Sentinel-5P satellite and proprietary algorithms to detect, quantify and attribute emissions to their source. Our most recent findings, cited by the International Energy Agency, show that:
- There are around 100 large events at any one time around the world, and together they release 20 million tons of methane per year. This is equivalent to 1.8 billion tons of CO2 over a 20-year horizon.
- Approximately half of these events occur in regions associated with oil & gas production and transportation and/or coal mining. At nearly 1 billion tons of CO2 equivalent, these emissions are in the same order of magnitude as the entire carbon footprint of German and France.

We believe that the ability to provide real-time detection and measurement, as opposed to the engineering estimates that are the basis of most benchmarks, will profoundly change the conversation around methane and the direction of climate policy. In particular, greater transparency can drive progress on GHG mitigation. the potential to disrupt the valuation of companies in many sectors beyond the oil & gas industry
